With plants from many different parts of the world, it’s sometimes a challenge to cater for them all in Morrab! We have two heated greenhouses for raising and housing the most tender plants such as young succulents, but there are other plants, not as fussy, but which still need some shelter against the wet and cold. Last year the Friends of Morrab Gardens purchased a cold greenhouse for the gardens. This was to be used for overwintering tender plants and grow seasonal plants in the summer. It certainly proved its worth during the cold spell we had in March!
This year we have bought an additional greenhouse to give more room for the young plants we have propagated.
And this extra space will enable us to hold regular plant sales, providing a good choice of unusual plants for local people and visitors to buy. Neither of these important facilities would have been possible without the generous support of members of the Friends of Morrab Gardens.
As a thank you, we invited Friends to celebrate the official opening of the new greenhouse, and to have first chance to buy plants that have been raised by volunteers.
We are grateful to Cllr Dick Cliffe, Mayor of Penzance, for attending to formally open the greenhouse. Thanks to volunteers – particularly Linda, Lois, Michelle and Mike – for their work in propagating plants for sale, and to all members of the Friends for joining with us to celebrate our achievements.
